The Rich Man Responds…
So you “envy” my life do you?
You see the toys and homes and trips
And you think my life is full of ease and choices
You’re not wrong on one level, there is privilege with wealth
Choices can be easier and comfort can be bought
But do you really think this is all there is to my life?
That getting here and staying here has no cost?
I’ve slept little on too many nights to count
My heart weakened by years of showing a brave front
When real fear quaked as plans teetered on pass/fail
I’ve lost count of the twists and turns of fortune
A zero sum game is a path you have to make peace with
Have you tried that?
Oh and yes the wreckage of family pain runs in my walk
Not with me but with too many...
Second marriages, kids who hate you, broken homes
Not always but make sure you take that into account
You tend to question loyalty differently from my perch
Do people like you for you or the things that surround you
Trust gets weathered and changes your outlook
Soon it’s holding on to stuff that is harder than getting it
So be careful when you look at me, wondering if it’s easy
If you want my life you have to take it all.
Not just the parts that you like or think you see.
And by the way, did you ever think that you might be someone’s Rich Man?
That maybe someone is looking at your life and labeling you--
Maybe you should think about that? We all have a “Rich Man”….even me
And oh yah... next time you might want to talk to me about God...
Take the leap and give me the benefit of the doubt
You’d be surprised how many of us “Rich Guys” might listen.
